In historical documents, apatite, due to its varied colors, was easily confused with other gemstones. Werner named it "apatite," derived from the Greek word "apatáō," meaning "to deceive," to reflect its propensity for misidentification. Lepidolite was first described by a German chemist in 1792. Because of its pale purple appearance, it was initially named "lilalite." Later, a German mineralogist proposed the name "lepidolite," derived from the Greek word "lepidos," meaning "scale," due to its flaky structure.
